The Importance of Copper for Horses

Copper enhances the body's absorption of iron and is essential for the body's formation of hemoglobin (red blood cells). Copper is also necessary for enzymes involved in the production of elastin, collagen, and melanin, which contribute to the skin’s protective and elastic properties.

Copper is required for bone formation, joint surface structure, immune function, and coat pigmentation.

Copper Deficiency in Horses

There is evidence suggesting a link between copper deficiency and the occurrence of loose bone fragments, especially in younger horses.

Anemia is often caused by copper deficiency, and one sign of a deficiency is coat color fading.
